Accident
Checklist
What
to do after an auto
accident
Check
for injuries. The
first thing to do at
the crash site is to
determine the extent
of driver and
passenger injuries. If
the accident is a
fender bender,
emergency medical care
might not be
necessary. However,
when in doubt, call an
ambulance.
Don't
admit liability or
fault to the other
driver. You
should avoid saying
"I'm sorry"
because that can be
interpreted as an
admission of fault.
The insurance
companies and the
investigating police
officer will determine
who is to blame.
If
you happen to have a
camera in your car,
take photos of the
accident scene (don't
do anything to
endanger yourself
while doing this).
Call
the police, even if
the accident is
minor
Once
the police have been
notified, get as much
information as
possible:
1.
Names, addresses,
phone numbers, vehicle
information and
insurance information
of all other drivers
involved in the
accident.
2.
Names,
addresses and phone
numbers of all
witnesses and
passengers.
3.
Name
and department of the
responding police
officer.
4.
If
your car is towed, the
name and phone number
of the towing
company.
5.
jot
down details about the
accident, the
location, and
circumstances such as
weather conditions and
visibility.
As
soon as you are able,
you must call your
insurer and file an
accident report.
